Adele, who appeared at first to take Cordon’s intervention in good spirits, then flipped the Brits the middle finger.

The north londoner who last week scooped five Grammys walked could at least console herself with the two awards she walked away with, for Best Female Artist in addition to the Best Album gong.

The incident sparked derision on social media networks, with many people blaming George Michael, for his overlong introduction.

Kerrang editor, James McMahon tweeted: “Just seen Adele giving the middle finger. She is basically the sexiest woman in the entire world.”

A spokesman for ITV said: “The BRITs is a live event. Unfortunately the programme was over running and we had to move on. We would like to apologise to Adele for the interruption.”

When asked about the incident later in the evening Adele said “I was about to thank the British public for their support. They cut me off, sorry if I offended anyone but the suits offended me.”

Adele had earlier in the evening left fans questioning whether she was engaged – turning up wearing a ring that look suspiciously matrimonial on her wedding finger.
