The speech, which took place at the Whitehouse Correspondents Dinner, a journalist’s organisation, seemed tailor-made for cynical journos with lashings of satirical sideswipes and some cunning timing.
It’s traditionally an occasion when the president can put aside some of the usual formalities and give the media a good roasting.
Obama gave his political opponent, the notoriously wealthy Republican Mitt Romney “It’s great to be here this evening in the vast, magnificent Hilton ballroom,” said the president, pausing for comic timing “or what Mitt Romney would call a little fixer-upper”
“Last year at this time – in fact, on this very weekend – we finally delivered justice to one of the world’s most notorious individuals.” he said, as he showed a photo of billionaire businessman and political opponent Donald Trump.
