Thicke’s catchy #1 pop hit attracted controversy for its blatant use of females parading with their boobies out. In this new version, a shot by shot subversive tribute has been created to even things out.
Singer Caela Bailey, suited up and accompanied by stripped male burlesque performers in make up sings “You’re just so manly / You’re the hottest dick in this place.”
The original song itself came under fire from some critics online. Blogger Lisa Huyne of Feminist in LA said “Seriously, this song is disgusting – though admittedly very catchy.”
Blurred Lines video director Diane Martel defended the nudey fest saying it was a tribute to erotic photographer Helmut Newton.
“I directed the girls to look into the camera, this is very intentional and they do it most of the time; they are in the power position.” Martel told Grantland.
“I don’t think the video is sexist. The lyrics are ridiculous, the guys are silly as fuck.”
Mod Carousel said: “We made this video specifically to show a spectrum of sexuality as well as present both women and men in a positive light, one where objectifying men is more than alright and where women can be strong and sexy without negative repercussions.”
