It’s a close run thing with Brewi and former Olympic champion Simmen jostling for the lead at several points during their 2-minute duel.
First Brewi pulls in front, then Simmen regains the lead, then they swap again before Brewi pulls through the finish inches ahead.
Simmen has the edge on the downhill sections, gaining speed on his two-wheeled adversary, but there’s one thing he doesn’t have – pedals. In the final straight – which flattens out – Brewi powers himself ahead and clears the line first.
Bike magazine editor Joe Parking said of the challenge: “It surprised me, because when I first heard about this I thought the snowboarder would win for sure. Riding on snow is tough. Thick cold air and a lot more resistance on the tyres make it hard to keep any kind of speed.”
