Marissa Powell, 21, seemed to be doing well in the competition, right up until the point she was asked about how women continue to earn less than men, and what it means for society.

She answered “I think we can relate this back to education and how we are continuing to try to strive to figure out how to create jobs right now. That’s the biggest problem right now.”

Aided by a few supportive cheers from the crowd, Miss Powell continued “especially the men are seen as the leaders of this and so we need to try to figure out how to create education better so that we can solve this problem.”

Maybe it was just nerves? Or was she harking back to the Miss Teen South Carolina pageant in 2007, where Caitlin Upton made the infamous statement “the Iraq everywhere”?

Either way, after providing her audience with a few laughs, Miss Powell successfully managed to secure 3rd Runner-Up at the pageant.
