The mysterious marsupial was snapped by a motorist in Winmarleigh near Garstang over the weekend.

Dave Kerfoot of Lancashire Police said police were investigating as to where the want-away macropodidae had sprung from and where it had got to.

Kerfoot conceded that he had initially “suspected that it was residents wanting a Winmarleigh Wallaby to rival the Pilling Panther,” a reference to a local large cat myth.

The hunt for the wallaby is continuing and motorists visiting the area have been warned to be extra vigilant should it attempt to cross a road again.

Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of the wallaby should contact Lancashire police on 01772 614444
