While most of United States is shocked, outraged and morning after these events, the Westboro Baptist Church has other ideas. Members of the church plan to picket at the high-profile funeral and “to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment,” posted the ‘church’s’ founder Fred Phelps, on Twitter.

Westboro Baptist Church is an unaffiliated religious group that defines itself as a ‘church’. They are known for their homophobic banners and for protesting at the funerals of US soldiers killed in combat.

They believe that anyone who dies has been struck by the will of god and is therefore a sinner. They have outraged towns and communities across America as a result of their extreme lengths to gain publicity.

Shirley Phelps-Roper, from Westboro Baptist Church, tweeted: “O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.”

Hours after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School she tweeted: “Westboro will picket Sandy Hook Elementary School to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment.”

One upset Twitter user replied: “Stay away from those poor children’s funerals. You are SICK, sad, & desperate people.”

The organisation also holds the rights to the domain godhatesfags.com, and refers to homosexuals as “soul-damning, nation-destroying filth.”

Hacktivists Anonymous hit back at the picketing plans, saying in a statement on Twitter “We will destroy you. We are coming.” They published home addresses, private emails and phone numbers of members of the church, criticising the church members for “breeding hatred”.

As of today, around 90,000 people have signed a petition on the official Whitehouse website entitled ‘Legally recognize Westboro Baptist Church as a hate group.’
