A poll of 40,000 people revealed that almost 10% of those asked picked the number of days, seas and Snow White’s dwarves as their favourite digit.
Three and eight were runners-up in the poll, while 110 came in last with no votes.
The survey was carried out by Alex Bellos, author of Alex’s Adventures in Numberland.
“At first I thought this interrogation was frivolous, a way of poking fun at me (or maths),” he said. “But gradually I learned that many people have genuinely strong feelings about numbers, and this realisation prompted me to launch the survey.”
Some strange coincidences arose during the investigation – 41 people chose 1,729 and 29 gave 142,857 as their chosen number.
