The majority of households affected were in South Perth, Victoria Park, Swan View and Como.

Earlier, Western Power gave updates on its Facebook page.

‘Our crews are working to safely restore power to 26,000 customers who have been affected this afternoon by the severe storms in the Perth metro area and South West,’ it wrote.

‘Crews are currently assessing the damage to the network and will reconnect power as quickly as possible.

‘If powerlines fall across your car, stay inside the car until help arrives.’

It later said power had been returned to some 14,000 homes while work to return power to the remaining 12,000 was ongoing.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a warning for damaging winds, thunderstorms, hail and local flooding.
