Nicola Thomas, a huge fan of the Monarchy, waited in the rain in Wellington to catch a glimpse of the royal couple.

“Kate and Wills are great ambassadors for the Royal Family, and I have such great memories of Lady Di,” she said.

The royal tour has cost an estimated NZ$1M, and has is expected to have a huge impact on New Zealand’s tourism industry and reputation abroad.

The blue-blooded couple were showered with gifts, including a boat, a bike, a bear, books and a rugby ball for their son Prince George.

However, not all New Zealanders were out in force to support Kate and Wills, as campaign group New Zealand Republic flew a banner across Auckland Harbour above the couple which read: ‘Time for a Kiwi head of state.’

A poll by the group before the tour started suggested 46% of New Zealanders want the Queen’s successor to be their next head of state, with 44% preferring it was a New Zealander.
