Morrissey (Decca)

Although it’s being talked up by a music press desperate for it to succeed, the third big Morrissey comeback in the past five years isn’t any better than the last two.

The singer’s in better voice than ever, and there are a few typically sharp turns of phrase.

But the songs, with only a couple of exceptions (chiefly the torchy It’s Not Your Birthday Anymore), are feeble, and the band rarely helps.

Track ten is jarringly entitled You Were Good In Your Time.
