Youtube’s ‘Gap Yah’ sketch, taking the piss out of middle-class students on mind expanding trips around the globe has been named Youtube’s top UK comedy video of 2010.
‘Gap Yah’ shows a plumy accented student, Orlando, phoning his friend to describe the incredible time he’s having on his Gap Yah. The conversation is brilliantly banal and ends every time with the protagonist “chundering”.
The clip made ‘Gap Yah’ an instant catch phrase.
Theatre group The Unexpected Items, who created Gap Yah, said: “It’s a satire on the great number of people who seem to be leaving these shores to vomit all over the developing world.”
The most watched Youtube clip ever was an interview with 24-year-old Alabama Antoine Dodson in the U.S. about the attempted rape of his younger sister. The interview was turned into the “Bed Intruder Song” and became internet history.
Youtube has split winning videos into different categories. The most viewed British talent show clip was Cher Lloyd’s X Factor audition while Justin Bieber’s ‘Baby’ was 2010’s overall most viewed clip in the UK.
Mia Quagliarello, YouTube community manager, said that increasingly people are using Youtube as a launch pad. “More and more people are seeing YouTube as a place they can make it their career,” she said. “We try to give them the tools and the financials to make that happen.”
