Emotional Zara Phillips held back tears as she rode her favourite horse Toytown before retiring him.

The 30-year-old and Toytown have won many races, including when she was hailed eventing world champion in 2006.

Zara, who refers to Toytown as the "horse of a lifetime" took the horse on a lap of honour at a festival at Gatcombe Park in Stroud, Glos.

A source told the Mirror: “Zara’s being brave, but she’s very upset. She became very attached to him.”

The 18-year-old horse will now be put out to pasture after suffering several injuries.
