Maths rockers Foals lead this year’s NME Awards with five nominations including best British Band, best album and best live band.

Lead by charismatic frontman and guitarist Yannis Philippakis, the band will go up against Arctic Monkeys, Biffy Clyro, Kasabian and Muse in the best British Band category.

Foal's album Total Life Forever will compete with Arcade Fire’s, The Suburbs, Crystal Castles’ Crystal Castles II, My Chemical Romance’s Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys and Two Door Cinema Club’s Tourist History for Best album.

In the best album category, Foals will take on Arcade Fire, Crystal Castles, My Chemical Romance and Two Door Cinema Club.

Meanwhile best international band will be contested by Arcade Fire, Kings Of Leon, My Chemical Romance, The Drums and Vampire Weekend.

Dave Grohl has already garnered an NME Award so far this year. The Foo Fighters’ lead man was awarded the Godlike Genius Award.

In some of the more lighthearted categories Julian Assange will battle it out with Gerard Way, Lady Gaga and Kanye West as Hero of the year and Cheryl Cole is up for Worst album with Messy Little Raindrops'

The ceremony will take place at London's Brixton Academy on Wednesday 23 February.
