Simon Cowell had a secret engagement to a Page Three girl, it has been revealed.

The music boss, 52, is said to have proposed to Louise Payne after she split with husband, Fred Fairbrass, from Right Said Fred.

The pair were together for three years, but the relationship ended when the now 43-year-old blonde said she wanted a family and Cowell was too busy.

Cowell popped the question in a lift during a business trip to New York, apparently.

A source said: “Simon was heartbroken. They tried to make it work but it all went wrong.”

The source added: “The relationship had its ups and downs. They split twice but he was so in love with her he kept trying to make it work.

“After the third attempt, they split for good. It was just before he started on Pop Idol. Louise wanted kids and he knew he wasn’t ready.

“He never stopped loving her, though.”

The pair had met at a function in London in 1995, where they swapped numbers after Cowell’s brother Nicholas persuaded him to approach her.

Cowell has since dated models Jackie St Clair and Jasmine Leonard, TV presenter Terri Seymour and make-up artist Mezghan Hussainy.

The release this week of a biography entitled Sweet Revenge: The Intimate life of Simon Cowell, has also claimed that he had an affair with fellow X Factor judge Dannii Minogue.
