When the calcium is low at birth

There are certain cases where calcium deficiency is by birth. This is called Neonatal Hypocalcaemia that occurs in infants mostly within the first two days after birth. When this happens, there is a high risk for the infant to be small for their age. Maternal diabetes is another subsequent risk. When an infant has a late onset of hypocalcaemia, it is usually because of drinking cow’s milk or milk formula that contains high amount of phosphate.
