Lean Body Mass is derived from subtracting the body fat from the total weight. It is an essential factor when determining how healthy a person is. Simply put, the body fat should never come too close to the lean body mass.

Lean Body Mass can be calculated using a simple equation that requires basic information like total body weight and body fat.

Lean Body Mass = Total Body Weight - Body Fat. This means, if you weigh 116 pounds and have 12 pounds of body fat then your Lean Body Mass (LBM) would be 116 -12 = 104lb. 

Lean Body Mass Percentage Standards 

Men typically feature a higher percentage of LBM than women by nature. Thus the standards involved in this measurement are divided along the gender lines. The reason behind this additional body fat in women is due to the maternal roles that require them to give birth. The extra fat in such circumstances would be beneficial to the bearer and encourage positive results. 

In general, your lean body mass percentage should range between 60 and 90%, depending on a variety of factors such as your gender, age, and lifestyle. Women who have a lean body mass that is lower than 68%, for instance, could be viewed as unhealthy, while this number rises to 75% when dealing with men. Older people will also have more body fat than their younger counterparts and thus exhibit a lower LBM percentage. All these factors deserve consideration when you estimate your lean body mass percentage

Athletes are involved in continuous training activities and thus are expected to exhibit a higher LBM percentage that ordinary individuals. Women athletes’ LBM percentage averages between 81 and 91%, while men feature a range between 84 and 94%. 

The Loss of Lean Body Mass as you Age 

The Current Opinions in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care journal posted an article in 2010 that stated once you pass the age of 30, you will typically begin to lose your LBM percentage at a rate of between 3 and 8% every ten years. Your metabolism rate decreases with age, and this can be seen as one of the reasons for such a gradual change. 

People who are more energetic in their everyday life and take part in exercises such as jogging and hiking in their older age are likely to lose their LBM at a slower pace. It is essential to ensure that you do not allow your body to relax in old age, as this will lead to a faster loss of active muscles. Simple measures such as going for regular walks can help you maintain an adequate LBM as you advance in years.
