Train travel in the UK can be ludicrously expensive. We mean £100 for the pleasure of going to Hull expensive (why the hell would you do that when you can fly somewhere ace in Europe for under £50?). But here’s a nifty trick – try the Tickety Split app. This freebie shows you ticket combinations that work out cheaper than straightforward single and return fares. Capable of saving you hundreds.

Need a place to crash but don’t really care where? Use lastminute.com’s ‘Top Secret Hotels’ function. You can pick the area and the date, then the website picks the hotel for you, with a discount on the room (up to 35 per cent off) guaranteed. You only learn the name of the hotel once you’ve booked.
