James Bond fans are waiting with baited breath for the announcement today of the next film in the long running franchise.

Believed to be named Skyfall, the next instalment in the spy saga will once again star Daniel Craig, the star widely seen as responsible for bringing credibility back to the Bond series.

Acclaimed stage and screen director Sam Mendes, the man behind the Oscar-winning American Beauty, has been hard at work on the new film over at Pinewood Studios. A solid array of supporting stars include Ralph Fiennes, scene-stealer Javier Bardem is believed to be playing the villain, and Pirates of the Caribbean's Naomie Harris is likely to appear along with veteran actor Albert Finney.

The 23rd film in the series, which has been going strong since 1962's Dr No, is said to take place in India and South Africa as Bond chases down a secretive organisation.

Ajay Chowdhury of the James Bond International Fan Club told the Daily Mirror "Bond fans around the world...have been made to wait extra long for this film as the world recession delayed the MGM green light for some time."

The casting of Daniel Craig for 2006's franchise re-boot Casino Royale was not entirely welcomed by fans at the time, but his inclusion into the Bond legacy brought record profits, with Royale taking over £367 million worldwide at the box office.
