The scene However, dive inside, past the diners in the burger restaurant and down the steps, and you’ll find a moody, red-lit martini lounge, where you can order from an American-themed menu that’s chock-full of trendy cocktails.

Hide away in a corner, or grab some mates and fill out one of the comfy leather banquettes.

The grub Upstairs is home to all things grilled, American-style – fill up on fillets, sirloins, rumps and burgers. While in the bar, munch on snacks including salt and pepper squid, rare beef, or sharing dishes and nachos.
Behind the bar Where to start? The wine list showcases some of the States’ best vinos (most of which you’ve probably never heard of), while there are also some US beers, including Brooklyn Lager and Blue Moon. The cocktail list is where it’s at, though.

Go for a Sazerac (billed as the oldest recorded cocktail) if you’re a cognac fan, or there are martinis galore (pornstar, pomegranate, pear and elderflower), and more than a sprinkling of tequila and rum options, as well as shooters.

Bill please Nibbles from £3.50; wines from £4.50; bottled beers from £4; cocktails from £6.50. In the restaurant: burgers from £8; steaks from £14.

Perfect surroundings for a pre-night-out drink or a slap-up meal. cd
