The Jam Tree Chelsea knows how to do brunch, says Kaye Holland.
Located on the fashionable King Road in the heart of Chelsea, The Jam Tree has shown its staying power.
Push through the doors and it’s easy to see why: it’s an attractive airy space owing to its assortment of comfy lounge chairs, wooden floors and walls adorned with funky pop art. Meanwhile the open plan garden is a pleasant place in which to make the most of the May sunshine and enjoy an al fresco bite to eat.
Speaking of which, TNT tried the enchantingly eclectic brunch menu which sees Middle Eastern shakshuka and the American Cowboy breakfast (Spicy scrambled eggs, salted sour cream, refried beans, avocado, corn tortilla and fresh curd cheese) juxtaposed alongside traditional brunch favourites like the Full English and Eggs Benedict.
Being in an adventurous mood, TNT ordered the shakshuka - aka rich stewed tomatoes, onion and peppers with two eggs baked into the mix and topped with a spicy yogurt dressing and urfa chilli - which proved sublimely satisfying. It was warming and comforting, the perfect Sunday morning pick-me-up. Meanwhile our dining companion opted for THAT Nigella favourite - Avocado and poached egg on toast - which she declared “divine” before being defeated by the portion size.
Make no mistake: The Jam Tree certainly doesn’t want you to starve and, as such, portions are plentiful (and beautifully presented). Regardless of which dish you choose, do ask about their bottomless brunch offer: order any item from the brunch menu on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 midday-3pm and for, £17.50, quaff unlimited Prosecco. Prices meanwhile are (for Chelsea) surprisingly reasonable and service well-meaning, if a little haphazard.
All told, this is a pleasant, unpretentious place in which to pass a few hours and really is too good to leave just to the Made In Chelsea crowd…
