Queensland Police have formally charged a 25-year-old man with the murder of French student Sophie Collombet.

He has been charged with murder, rape, deprivation of liberty and robbery.

The man, who cannot be named until after his first court appearance, was arrested in Coffs Harbour in New South Wales shortly before 3pm on Monday after Police had declared him a person of interest.

Ms Collombet was found naked in Kurilpa Park in South Brisbane on Friday March 28 with no possessions except for some jewellery.

Police said she was last seen leaving the Cultural Centre Bus Station at 8.47pm on Thursday March 27 and walking along the boardwalk adjacent to the Brisbane River in the vicinity of the Kurilpa Bridge.

They described the attack as “brutal” and said the cause of death was “brain injury by blunt trauma”.
