Movember – or ‘no shave November’ – launches today as thousands of men across the globe grow a moustache to raise awareness of prostate cancer.
On November 1, men register at movember.com with clean-shaven faces. For the rest of the month razors are forsaken as mo’s of varying lengths, shapes and colours are grown.
The idea is that Movember becomes a month of “walking billboards” for men’s cancer. The end of ‘No shave November’ is celebrated with a party and ritual hair removal.
Last year, 447,000 Mo Bros – as participants are called – raised more than £48.6 million.
Since the beginning of the movement, more than £108.5 million has been generated for the charity.
A spokesperson for the charity said: “Movember will continue to work towards helping to change established habits and attitudes and make men aware of the risks they face, thereby increasing early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment.”
In charmingly chauvinistic fashion, Twitter comments today seem mainly concerned that women do not participate in Movember and use the fundraiser as an excuse to sport hairy legs.
“Ladies... Please don't participate in 'No Shave November',” says on Twitter user.
“Attention Ladies : No Shave November is meant for men not women,” tweeted another.
While one man writes: ‘’By the way...No Shave November is for Men....Ladies trim that....all of that.”
The habitually hirsute have welcomes the ‘tashe growing.
"No Shave November" is the only holiday that i'm always early for,” tweets one bearded chap.
