John Key made the shock announcement at his regular weekly press conference.

He called it "the hardest decision I've ever made" and cited personal reasons as an explanation.

As leader of the National Party, Key ousted the ruling Labour Party in the elections of 2008, and had secured a third term for his party in September 2014, however it seems as though pressure on his homelife has become too much, "All I can say is that I gave it everything I had. I have left nothing in the tank".

The official resignation date will be December 12th, after which Deputy PM Bill English is likely to take over until the party can hold a caucus to name a new leader.
