A 2006 X Factor contestant, wheelchair user Kerry McGregor, has died aged 37 after a battle with bladder cancer.

The Scottish singing star, from West Lothian, made the final 10 in 2006's X Factor before being diagnosed with bladder cancer two years ago.

As McGregor underwent treatment she took up work with a number of charities including Leonard Cheshire Disability and Action for Bladder Cancer.

However it was revealed that 37-year-old yesterday died yesterday.

A spokesman said: "It is with deep sadness we announce that Kerry passed away at home, earlier today, following a battle with cancer."

McGregor  brought up by her mother after her father was killed in an accident when she was 5. Beginning life as a talented gymnast, she was confined to a wheelchair after breaking her back in an accident when she was 13.

In 2006, she made it to the finals of the X Factor and was mentored by Sharon Osborne - who has also battled cancer - in the series that was won by Leona  Lewis.

McGregor was hailed as an inspiration by fellow Scot, Britain's Got Talent star Susan Boyle and it has emerged that the pair were about to record a duet together, but had to halt it due to McGregor's deteriorating health.

The singer was married to property developer Dean Robertson and has a 7-year-old son, Joshua.

Friends, fans and celebrities have been paying tribute to McGregor.

Her manager, Ewan Gallagher, said: 'This is a desperately sad time for all Kerry’s friends and family. She was such a gifted singer and song-writer. She left more than 40 of her own songs unrecorded at her death.

Sharon Osbourne tweeted: "So sad about Kerry McGregor's passing. Much love and respect to her and her family."

While Simon Cowell said: "I just heard the sad news about Kerry McGregor.

"I really admired Kerry and my thoughts now go out to all of her family & friends."
