What do you want to be when you grow up? Batman, obviously. Right answer of course, but if you're a five-year-old boy with cancer you don't have to wait.

Caped crusader Miles Scott wanted to be Batman, so the Make a Wish Foundation went as close as they could and made him Batkid with help from San Francisco Police and thousands of locals.

The city became Gotham City and the streets were lined with grateful citizens.

Beaming Miles, who was diagnosed with leukemia at 18 months old, arrived in a Batmobile - driven by his older partner in fighting crime, and went after the Riddler and saved a damsel in distress (naturally, she was tied to tram tracks).

Police chief Greg Suhr gave Batkid the support he required, while the city's NFL and baseball teams chipped in with their support.

"Our hero has arrived. The streets of San Francisco are safe today," said a tweet from San Francisco 49ers account.

The story has since gone viral, with thousands around the world loving the stunt, including Barack Obama who sent a video message, and broadcasters such as CNN broadcasting live.

"I've never seen anything go viral like this, with the outpouring of support from across the world," said Patricia Wilson of Make-a-Wish Foundation.

San Francisco Chronicle printed a Gotham City Chronicle with the headline "Batkid Saves City" while the US Attorney's office put out a press release saying the Riddler and Penguin had been nabbed for conspiracy and kidnapping.

"Duo faces long prison terms thanks to Batkid," it said.

Adding to the good (fingers crossed) news story, Miles' leukemia is in remission.

US Attorney Melinda Haag said: "I've been involved in some unbelievable cases and I've worked with some pretty remarkable law enforcement officers, but the bravery displayed by Batkid is off the charts. I'm absolutely certain that there is no villain this remarkable superhero can't defeat."
