A sinkhole that opened up on award winning Rainbow Beach, Queensland, without warning at around 11pm on Saturday night in front of shocked campers was estimated to be around 150 metres wide with a three metres base.

Melanie Wotherspoon, who was camping nearby, witnessed the sinkhole engulfing vehicles.

“It was truly scary how fast it came into our camp site and swallowed it all up,” she wrote on Facebook.

Police and search and rescue teams cleared the campsite and later confirmed there were no injuries.

Expert geoscientists said recent earthquake activity was not the cause of the massive sinkhole which is near Fraser Island.
