Sol Campbell has warned England footy fans ‘don’t even risk’ travelling to the Ukraine and Poland for this summer’s Euros, because of violence and racism, which is endemic in the twin host nations.
Campbell was speaking after viewing footage filmed by the BBC, who had spent a month filming football matches in both of the nations, during which they witnesses anti-Semitism, monkey chants directed at black players and even Nazi salutes on the terraces.
Uefa has said that awarding this summer’s European Championships to the twin host nations gives them a chance to improve their images and the chance for football to tackle issues such as racism head on.
However, Campbell, after viewing the BBC’s footage, disagreed: “I think they [Uefa] were wrong [to award Ukraine and Poland the championships], because what they should say is that ‘if you want this tournament, you sort your problems out. Until we see a massive improvement… you do not deserve these prestigious tournaments in your country.’”
