Guanabara Bay in which athletes will sail, windsurf and swim is full of diarrhoea and vomit inducing bugs, according to scientists.

The New York Times has reported that Dr. Daniel Becker said, "Foreign athletes will literally be swimming in human crap, and they risk getting sick from all those microorganisms.”

While acknowledging that the city's water is filthy in many areas, government officials and the International Olympic Committee insist that the places where athletes will compete meet World Health Organisation safety standards.

According to reports athletes are taking the quality of water seriously.

The athletes aren't the only ones in danger, as famed Ipanema Beach, popular with tourists is also at risk.
