Italian influences and Balkan favourites are the menu.
You’ll be hard pressed to find authentic Slovene cuisine as the food here is heavily influenced by the Italians. Risotto, pizza and pasta rule, Ok?
That said, Balkan classics which go heavy on the meat, like goulashes and stews, are widely available. Fish, both salt water and freshwater, are also plentiful and deliciously fresh.
Be sure to sample some of Slovenia’s famous tipples such as the red Teran from the Karst region and Cvicek from eastern Slovenia. But beware the house wines which can be cheap and nasty.
