Travel Guide: Austria Food & Drink

12th Jul 2015 12:00am | By Editor

The traditional Austrian meal will definitely to fill you up.

Food

Austrian food is filling rather than exquisitely delicious as is the food of some of its neighbours. But there are some traditional staples you need to try.

Sausages

Chowing down at a wurstel stand (sausage stand) is one of the best ways to eat in Austria. These are little kiosks selling a sausage in bread with mustard. These are invariably cheap and reliable, and the sausage is far tastier than your bog standard type you’ll get in a supermarket.

Cakes

Austria is famous for its cakes and pastries. Don’t miss the Sachertorte, a chocolate cake with apricot jam and whipped cream. Austria’s famous strudels are thin layers of pastry filled with apple (Apfelstrudel), sour cherry (Weichselstrudel), sweet cherry and poppy seed strudel (Mohnstrudel).

Drink

The Austrians love beer. Lagers and pilsners are most common, but it's also worth trying are the wheat beers (weizenbier).

Water

The water is safe to drink in Austria.
