My partner and I will be staying in Kobarid, Slovenia, for a week in June. As we’ll have a car we’d like to do a couple of day trips. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks! Kel, via email
Kobarid is a quaint town nestled amid the Julian Alps, but this tiny settlement (it is home to just over a thousand people) offers little beyond a few days of walks in the surrounding peaks, a modest museum and some good eating and drinking options.
A couple of day trips will be a great way to add some variety to your holiday and explore some of this diverse corner of Europe. Seeking out day trips won’t be difficult, as Kobarid’s main square hosts many adventure sports companies who are looking to whisk you off for a day of rafting, kayaking or paragliding.
As you’ll be close to the Italian border, you could easily explore some of the coastline of the little visited Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. It is just 90 minutes drive from Kobarid to the coast, where there are plenty of resorts to choose from. Head to Lignano for a sweeping bay, complete with six theme parks, or Il Carso for windswept cliffs and caves. Grado, a narrow island linked to the mainland by a causeway, is probably your best bet, offering a medieval town with a promenade perfect for an evening stroll.
My advice for your second day trip would be to drive less than two hours to Lake Bled in northwestern Slovenia. This spot offers a picture-perfect landscape with a church-topped islet, medieval castle and, of course, the serene lake.
