Australia is a land of opportunity. While many people think that work is only available in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia’s spread of cities means there are work opportunities from one end to the other.

What to expect
For every story about rising unemployment in Australia, comes another one about opportunity from those at the coalface of recruitment. James Nicholson, of recruiter Robert Walters, says jobs still exist, albeit in a more competitive environment.
“Every interview situation is far more competitive – more candidates of better quality are selling harder, and clients are demanding more from them,” he explains.
Growth industries
The buzzwords for 2010 are green jobs. Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd recently announced his government would create a massive 50,000 jobs in the sustainability field – good news for anyone who fancies being part of the fight against climate change.
In additon, Caroline Vickers-Willis from recruiter RossJuliaRoss highlights health, education, construction, insolvency, credit management, engineering and IT as the industries currently recruiting. There are also regional differences in getting a job with greater buoyancy reported in Queensland and Western Australia when it comes to engineering, property, energy and mining.
Land that job
With more people going for jobs, being prepared to tout your skills and achievements in a way that makes you stand out from the crowd becomes very important.
Rachel Baldy, manager at Hays GlobaLink, says anyone planning on moving home should get in touch with a global recruitment company before they leave London. Talk to the people at the frontline of recruitment about opportunities and also about what employers are looking for.
