Nicolas Cage is understood to have paid back around half of the £8million tax debt he owes for the period 2002-2006.

The Ghost Rider actor, famed for his wild hairstyles and his over the top acting, owed around £8million and is said to have paid back around half of this now, according to TMZ.

Cage settled a lawsuit against his former accountant in 2010 for making a procession of ill-advised investments that went on to lose the Snake Eyes star millions.

Cage was even forced to sell his Nevada home in order to cough up the money needed to keep the taxman at bay. He was probably hoping then that his recently released Ghost Rider sequel to have been a bigger hit than it was.

Cage can next be seen in action film Stolen, directed by Con Air helmer Simon West, about a thief searching for his daughter who has been kidnapped and locked in the boot of a taxi.
