You know that sound your washing machine makes, the one that sounds like it’s going to take off? Well it could be about to explode instead, according to a new investigation.
The website and magazine Which apparently received several serious complaints from users about their washing machines.
Some people explained how their doors had shattered while their machines were not even on, and some said the glass had entirely dropped out of its casing.
The brands mentioned in the complaints included Hoover, LG, Beko, Miele, Zanussi, Bosch and Samsung.
Online forum Whitegoodshelp has been collecting complaints for months, Beko was one brand that showed up time and time again. The Telegraph reported what one user had explained on the site:
"My Miele W3740 washing machine glass door suddenly exploded shedding shattered glass and water around the room. The machine cost £700 and is only twenty months old so still within guarantee."
Another compliant voiced:
"Bought a Beko washing machine less than two months ago and 20 mins ago the glass shattered. It was on a final spin and sent the shards of glass all over the kitchen floor and the clothes inside are covered in VERY SHARP pieces."
Adrian Porter, the Home Product Researcher at Which explained that the cases of exploding washing machines has gone up in the last year.
"...going through the accounts, there are theories ranging from hair cracks in the glass, or even that the glass is just thinner than it used to be. Still, nothing has been confirmed,” explained Porter to The Telegraph.
"It has also been suggested by a manufacturer that initial scratches on the glass could be caused by hard items like zip ends and belt buckles striking the door during the wash. We've contacted the manufacturers, and they're looking into the problem."
