This friendly hostel in the heart of Barcelona ticks all the right boxes: it’s clean, cosy and cheap as chips.

Overview: Located in a stunning heritage building and just a stone’s throw from Barcelona’s main tourist strip, La Rambla, the Alternative Creative Youth Hostel (ACYH) boasts a communal kitchen and hangout area, a daily cleaner, free internet access, cheap laundry service, free security lockers, 24-hour reception and – importantly – no lockout or curfew. ACYH is not exactly a ‘party’ place, but you’ll quickly make friends with like-minded travellers. The welcoming staff will clue you in on the city’s best bars, restaurants and  beach parties, and will organise nightly excursions for anyone who’s up for tagging along.

Wow factor: It’s the friendly vibe and relaxed atmosphere, the lack of dickheads and the kindness of the staff that will have you returning to this hostel again and again.

Three unisex dorms with eight beds per room.
