An Interview With A… Chef
Clare McKenna, 22, from Ireland
What made you decide to come and work in Australia?
The sunshine was a big factor in me coming to Australia. I am well known among my friends for my good tan!
What job are you doing at the moment?
I am working in the Paradiso Restaurant on Pitt Street, Sydney as a Chef.
How did you get the job?
I just handed in my CV and I literally got a call 10 minutes later asking me to come in for an interview. The interview was short and sweet and
I started later that week.
What’s the pay like?
The pay is very good, but there is also a lot of responsibility as I normally work in the kitchen on my own.
Is sponsorship a possibility?
Funny you should ask that! I actually got offered sponsorship in my first week of the job. I thought about it for a while, but in the end I decided that I would take my chances with trying to get a job in Ireland when I go home next July.
What job did you have at home?
I was a Chef in the Newgrange Hotel, County Meath, Ireland. I was working as part of a big team there, so it was a lot different to the type of work I am doing now.
How does working here compare to back home?
I work far less hours here and the atmosphere in the kitchen is a lot more relaxed.
