Fortunately the sales industry hasn’t been too badly hit by the recession. Ross Crawford from The Smart Group assures us that there are still plenty of jobs available. “There is a massive demand for people to step into the sales industry,” she says. “The Smart Group give you the opportunity to get your foot in the door in the sales industry and the chance to learn a skill you may never have had the chance to learn elsewhere.” So what qualities are they looking for? “The main criteria is that they are hard working, fun loving, willing to work Monday to Friday and some Saturdays, can work in a team, but as an individual as well.” Even if sales isn’t the career you’ve dreamed of it may help open a few doors says Ross. “If you get the opportunity to work in sales don’t turn it down. It can be a positive on your resume when you apply for future jobs. Most employers look favorably on candidates with sales experience. “It shows you can communicate with people at a high level.” Now it’s time to talk numbers. Although most jobs are commission and bonus based, reps can earn between $500 and $2000 a week. So maybe it would be smart to start selling yourself… soon.

AN INTERVIEW WITH… SALES REP

Heather, 23 from England

What made you decide to work in Australia? To escape the monotony and boredom back home – and to corrupt another country.

How did you get the job? I called up the appealing advert and started the next day. Easy! What do you do now? I’m a sales representative.

Any good stories to tell about your new job? There are too many! Every day something random happens, we’re usually laughing at someone else’s expense…

What are you planning to do with the money you earn from this job? Save up for a retro vespa and a swank batchelorette apartment – although that will probably take ages as I have a tendency to blow my wages on partying.

Where have you travelled so far, and where are you heading next? I’ve done the east coast, Darwin, Melbourne and a few random villages. I don’t intend on going anywhere next. I’m having too much of a good time in Sydney.
