It seems almost unbelievable but a US student had her Instagram account temporarily removed apparently because she was too fat.

Yep, shocking.

Samm Newman, a 19-year-old from Ohio, had her account deleted after she posted an underwear selfie.

"Fat is not a bad word," she told NBC4i. "How confident can you be if you keep censoring yourself because people don't want to look at you? I didn't find [the underwear] or the bra at all inappropriate. They covered me entirely and I've seen pictures like that all over Instagram."

She said Instagram was her “safe place” where she felt comfortable posting body images and she had used the site to promote body positivity.

Not anymore.

Instagram has strict guidelines against photos showing nudity but frequently allows much more revealing photos of skinnier girls and guys (check out Miley Cyrus' account or butt selfie queen Kim Kardashian!).

In a statement to FoxNews.com, the firm, which is owned by Facebook, said it “wrongly removed” her account.

“When our team processes reports from other members of the Instagram community, we occasionally make a mistake,” the statement read. “In this case, we wrongly removed an account and worked to rectify the error as soon as we were notified. We apologise for any inconvenience.”

The social media giant restored her account, but the picture - and another depicting her in a similar outfit - wasn't restored.

Big is beautiful.

Instagram, what gives?
