Chelsea’s nightmare of six games in 16 days was compounded with the news they’ll be heading to Russia for a Europa League last eight match against Rubin Kazan, while Tottenham have drawn Basel and Newcastle will be away to Benfica.
While the journey will be seen as less than ideal, Chelsea’s draw is about as favourable as you can get against the unfancied Russians.
Tottenham face last year’s Manchester United conquerors from Switzerland, but their electric form and the return of Gareth Bale will make this a tie they’ll be confident of winning.
Struggling in the Premier League but safe from relegation, Newcastle have turned their focus on the second-tier UEFA Cup, but face a tough challenge against Benfica, who make this stage after being dumped from the top-tier Champions League.
In the Champions League, for which the final will be played at Wembley, there are four delectable match-ups.
Remaining Spanish sides Barcelona and Real Madrid are favourites to go all the way, and have had friendly draws – if that’s possible at this stage.
Barca will be going to Paris Saint-Germain while Real will host Didier Drogba’s Galatasaray.
In the other final eight games, Malaga host Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich host Juventus.
