Manchester City defender Courtney Meppen, 18, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a crash in Manchester on Saturday evening, writes the Guardian.
The two people who died after crashing with what is believed to be the England youth team regular's car were brother and sister, police have said.
Kulwant Singh, 32, and his sister, Ravel-Kaur Singh, 37 died and Ms Singh’s two teenage sons were seriously injured as their Nissan Micra was hit by what is believed to have been Meppen-Walter’s Mercedes.
Ajmeet Singh, 16, is in a stable condition at Salford Royal Hospital but his older brother Harveen, 17, is still fighting for his life after a head injury.
A spokeswoman for Manchester City Football Club told the Guardian: "It is a devastating tragedy for this family and also for the Greater Manchester community at large. Manchester City Football Club offers its heartfelt condolences to the family and all affected by the events of yesterday evening.”
Meppen-Walter is kept in custody for questioning together with another driver, 19-year-old James Conroy, who is under the same suspicion.
Police are investigating whether the crash was a result of Meppen-Walter racing Conroy, who is thought to be his friend, on Manchester’s streets, Manchester Evening Standard (MEM) writes.
The victims were on their way home from a Sikh festival in a temple near the accident. Mr Singh was going to drive his sister and her sons home and then go back to pick up his wife and kids, aged one and three.
An eyewitness, who had run out from the temple after the crash, told MEM: “The driver of the Mercedes was standing in the middle of the road shouting ‘it wasn’t me, it wasn’t me’.”
Before his Twitter account was closed down, Meppen-Walter’s mother wrote on Sunday: “I’m Courtney mum and I’m devastated please all his friends be there for him I love him so much can’t think without him,” MEM writes.
Anyone who witnessed the crash at 10.15pm on Saturday are asked to call the serious collision unit on 0161 856 4742.
