The precocious and controversial 20-year-old Aussie brushed aside is acclaimed opponent 6-4 6-4 before a packed Perth Arena.
It was Tomic’s second win over the Serbian, but his first in a proper competition.
It was a different Tomic to the one accused of tanking against Andy Roddick in the 2012 US Open and dumped from the Australian Davis Cup squad due to a “poor attitude”.
“I played a very, very good match and I’m just happy after training hard the last few months that this is all coming good,” he said after the match.
“This is especially something I needed before the Australian Open. I’m playing the best tennis I’ve played the last few years, so I’m really happy with myself.”
Tomic’s serve and groundstrokes were lethal and gave Australia a chance to make the final of the international mixed tournament.
However, Djokovic’s partner, former world number one Ana Ivanovic overcame gallant 16-year-old Ashleigh Barty.
Tomic and Barty took the Serbian powerhouses to a match tiebreak, but were eventually bundled out of the tournament 2-1.
