Bistrotheque

The scene: Hidden down an unprepossessing alley, this hip-but-classy east London joint has a fine-dining restaurant and a cabaret room, but the main bar is worth visiting in its own right. Cosy, dimly-lit and wood-panelled, you’ll feel as if you’re in an old movie as your ubiquitously good-looking, stylish bar-tender shakes you a cocktail.

The grub: Head up to the restaurant for braised oxtail, oysters or fish and chips.

Behind the bar: Everything! Check out the extensive cocktail menu.

Bill please: Beer from £3.50, a glass of wine from £3.75 or cocktails from £7.

Verdict: Bistrotheque isn’t the place for a rowdy night out but if you want to impress a date, you’ll succeed. It’s stylish without being intimidating and if you’re looking for some rough and ready boozing after your cocktail, Shoreditch is just a stone’s throw away.
