Where west London watering holes are famed for their leafy beer gardens and dark-wood interiors with contemporary tweaking, those out east cultivate a different style – more innovative, more urban.

That can sound intimidating if you don’t know your way around that neck of the woods – so if you fancy checking it out but don’t know where to start, Hoxton Square is like a foundation course for drinking on the east side.

There are a few highlights – and it will probably take you more than one visit to find a favourite.

Check out the Hoxton Apprentice for a feed and then head round the corner to the magnificently named Zigrid von Underbelly to wet your whistle.

The Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen is a bigger venue in the same stretch that’s well-known for live music.
