I’m planning to go to Thailand in January for one week but I’m not too sure where to go. Koh Samui has been suggested, however I’ve heard January is their rainy season. What would your top recommendations be? Lisa, via email
Thailand is a fantastic year-round destination, as different parts of the country experience the rainy season at different times, meaning there is always somewhere you are guaranteed good weather. Koh Samui will be nearing the end of its rainy season in January and so may not be the best choice if you are looking to avoid torrential downpours.
My advice would be to opt for the region of Krabi on the west coast. This stunning section of Andaman coastline is picture postcard Thailand, with impressive rock formations jutting out of crystal clear waters. Don’t confuse the region of Krabi with Krabi Town, as the town is better used as a jumping-off point to explore the rest of the area.
Railay is one of Krabi’s most famed beaches, with limestone cliffs towering over the perfect crescent-shaped bay. Only possible to reach by boat, the journey to Railay makes this destination feel even more rewarding.
For even more seclusion, head south to the Trang Islands, which can be reached by boat from Krabi. Not as many tourists make it as far as the pristine sand bar at Hat Sivalai or the Tham Morakot (Emerald Cave). In high season, Tigerline runs a ferry between the island of Koh Lanta in Krabi to the Trang Island of Koh Muk.
