A man is reported to have shot himself in a park in Luton, Bedfordshire, following a stand-off with police.

An eyewitness told Sky News: “There was a gunshot. The man is now lying on the ground. He is surrounded by armed police and paramedics.”

Officers had been negotiating with the man in Leagrave Common after he was discovered in the park with a fire-arm at 8.30pm last night.

He was believed to be between 50 and 60 years of age.

Dozens of officers were at the scene and a cordon was set up. People were advised to stay away, but officers said there was no danger to the public.

Armed response officers had approached the man and “contained” the situation to an area between Sundon Park Road and Henge Way.

A single gunshot was heard at around midday and a man, who was believed to be holding a sawn-off shotgun, was apparently seen lying on the floor.
