A former co-worker told the New York Daily News: “When the dude snapped, he snapped.”

The unidentified source said it was this personality trait that led to Zimmerman getting fired from his security guard job, adding: “He had a temper and he became a liability.

“One time this woman was acting a little out of control. She was drunk. George lost his cool and totally overreacted.

“It was weird, because he was such a cool guy, but he got all nuts. He picked her up and threw her. It was pure rage. She twisted her ankle. Everyone was flipping out.”

That same year, at age 21, it is reported that Zimmerman was arrested in a university bar following a scuffle.

And a month later, records show that a woman filed a petition for an injunction against Zimmerman, complaining of domestic violence.

George Zimmerman, 28, claims he shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in self defence during a confrontation in a gated community in Sanford, Florida.

According to reports, Zimmerman called police to report a suspicious person after he saw Martin while out on patrol. Zimmerman then followed Martin – against the advice of the police emergency dispatcher – resulting in his shooting Martin, who was unarmed.

There have been widespread protests in the US over the case, calling for justice for Trayvon.

In recordings of Zimmerman’s call to the dispatch vehicle, he can be heard to say: “This guy looks like he is up to no good. He is on drugs or something.”

Zimmerman added that the teen had his hand in his waistband and was walking around looking at homes. “These a*******. They always get away,” Zimmerman is heard to say on the call.

However, Trayvon was not armed. He was returning from a convenience store with an iced tea and a bag of skittles.
