On Thursday, snow began falling in the north before spreading south across the UK. This morning London, south-east England and the Midlands were coated in two inches of powder.
London will remain cold today, with the mercury hovering around 3C, dropping to -6C this evening. Sunny spells are expected to emerge by the afternoon as snow flurries peter out.
Although the freezing weather is expected to let up by Sunday, the next 24 hours could still be hazardous for drivers. In Cumbria, more than 100 road accidents were reported yesterday as a result of icy roads.
Drivers are being warned to take care on ice roads
UK airports including Gatwick, London Luton, Birmingham International and Stansted are operating a full schedule today while Heathrow said that, although no disruption is expected, air travellers should check their flights status before leaving the house.
Last night the Met Office issued the following severe weather warning for London and South East England:
“Later in the night the snow is expected to die out across northern, eastern and much of central England to be followed by widespread ice on untreated surfaces. The public should be aware that, as a result, there could be some disruption to travel.”
Today, the warning was extended eastwards to cover more of southeast England.
