Prebble said he’d fulfilled his “life dream” after sitting on the fence in or about eighth position throughout the 3200m race before bursting through the field with 250m to go on the Lloyd Williams-owned roughie.
Irish-bred Green Moon’s victory was was Williams’ fourth Melbourne Cup win and Prebble’s first after 10 rides in the world’s richest two-mile race.
Green Moon ($21) finished ahead of Gai Waterhouse’s Fiorente ($31) and Jakkalberry ($81) in third.
The fancied French favourites Dunaden and Americian finished out of the first 10.
“He was never going to get beaten,” Prebble said. “He was on the fence and travelling well and he has a great turn of foot.”
“It’s my life dream to do it.”
Williams’s son Nick accepted the Cup from Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. “We put a lot of money in and a heck of a lot of effort so to get this result today is terrific,” he said.
