Long time Oscar almost ran Martin Scorsese leads the charge at this year’s Oscars with no fewer than 11 nominations for his kid-friendly fantasy Hugo, which is nominated in the Best Film category.

Martin Scorsese leads the charge at this year’s Oscars with no fewer than 11 nominations for his kid-friendly fantasy Hugo, which is nominated in the Best Film category.

This year’s Academy awards carry a retro flavour this year with Hugo, a 3D kids film that recreates Georges Méliès and the birth of cinema, and current awards-collecting machine The Artist, a contemporary silent film that harks back to Hollywood’s golden era, also nominated in the prestigious Best Picture Category.

George Clooney is nominated for Best Actor for Alexander Payne's superb drama The Descendants, and is up against the likes of Jean Dujardin for The Artist, Brad Pitt for Moneyball and Gary Oldman for Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy.

Meryl Streep receives her 17th Best Actress nomination for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, and after winning the Golden Globe for this role earlier this month, is the bookies fave to take the Golden Baldie home for the third time.
She faces competition from Glenn Close for Albert Nobbs, Viola Davis for The Help, Rooney Mara for David Fincher's dark The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and from Michelle Williams for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in My Week With Marilyn.

Most surprising nomination this year? Jonah ‘fat obnoxious one from Superbad’ Hill for Best Supporting Actor for Moneyball.

The 84th Academy Awards will take place at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on February 26.
